The first residents of the Townsend area were Native Americans dating back to 2000 B.C. The Cherokee Indians later settled the region in the 1600s and The first settlers in the 1800s. In 1900 Colonel W.B. Townsend of Pennsylvania, whom the town is named for, bought 86,000 acres of land for logging purposes. The land was logged until 1926 when Colonel Townsend sold 76,000 acres of that land that was later turned into a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Townsend is known as the “The Peaceful Side of the Smoky Mountains,” as it is home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s least busy main entrance. Townsend is a low-key town with a handful of affordable restaurants, motels and businesses that are geared toward outdoor activities.
