Tucked alongside the rushing waters of the Little River in Townsend, Tennessee, the Townsend River Walk & Arboretum is a tranquil 6-acre nature learning park. Maintained by dedicated volunteers from the Tuckaleechee Garden Club, this hidden gem serves as a living tree museum and offers a peaceful escape away from busy parkway traffic.
More than a simple walking path, the park combines native mountain botany with family-friendly features.
Home to 49 labeled native tree species—including Pawpaws, Carolina Silverbells, Big Leaf Magnolias, and towering Eastern Hemlocks. Each marked tree includes a detailed sign and a QR code you can scan with your smartphone for extended ecological facts.
Stroll through native pollinator beds, sensory gardens, wildflower patches, and manicured memorial plots.
Children can explore dedicated play areas, a miniature "Townsend Express" train display, and a fairy garden hidden among the foliage.
Benches line the path along the Little River, making it an ideal spot to relax, birdwatch, fish, or watch kayakers float past.
The park spans 8 interconnected footpaths totaling roughly 0.3 to 0.5 miles along the river bank.
The north end of the arboretum connects directly to the 10-mile paved Townsend Historical Trail, allowing walkers and cyclists to extend their trek across town.
The trail surface varies between paved asphalt, gravel paths, and packed soil. Smooth, flat access is available on the north end, though some gravel sections can require a bit of extra effort with standard strollers or narrow-wheeled wheelchairs.
